EMU Wools Ltd.

Anyone ever knit with Emu wool? Emu Wools Ltd was a knitting yarn manufacturer founded and based in Keighley that was particularly successful in the 1940s to 1960s. The spinning company was founded by the Greenwood family as far back as the 1850s and stayed in the family’s hands until the 1970s. Images from the History Society digital archive on Flickr.

  1. I just bought some emu angorelle today from a charity shop it’s a lovely soft double knitting wool that I’m going to knit a small rabbit with.

    1. I also found this lovely yarn in a thrift store and was interested in the history of the woolen mill. My yarn is a double crepe in the color Sedge, lovely. I feel quite blessed to have found this wool and am attempting to knit a lacy vest. If possible, I’d love to see the small rabbit you knit. I live in Canada.

  2. around 1976-77 I was a student at the Doncaster faculty of art and design, part of our course was to design a window display for emu wools, as I loved the outdoors and my parents having a lovely garden, I decided to design mine around a garden theme displaying all different colours of wools for the flowers and foliage, a watering can that had wires coming out of the spout and blue wools slotted on to these to mimic water, and other things related to a garden. much to my delight I won, and was awarded with a choice of wool from a samples book, not realizing the costs of yarns at this point! chose the most expensive one that that was there, it was absolutely beautiful and felt amazing, I then was asked to chose a pattern for this wool and also received the knitting needles to go along with It. Id never won anything up to this point and had only ever knitted squares from 4 yrs old, so I needed to learn once I received my bundle. Im still knitting and find this to be a lovely relaxing hobby for those chilly times.

  3. Just purchased 13 skeins of Emu Filigree Drifters. All appear to be same dye lot but one. The yarn seems to be in perfect condition. Will inspect by rolling into balls. It’s a beautiful texture and color; blended royal blue/black. It will make a lovely shawl. Found it at Atlanta, Georgia, USA, Goodwill Store/charity shop for $.99 per skein. Truly a treasure trove. So sad the company is out of business.
    Sincerely,

  4. I was looking for a budget chunky yarn to make a winter sweater and was delighted to find Emu Wool at a great price on The Knitting Network. My mum bought me Emu DK back in the early 1970’s to make my first knit cardigan and I still have the pattern which I’m thinking of remaking just for the thrill!
