April’s History Society meeting is on Wednesday 8th April 2026. This time we are meeting “on location” at St. John’s Church in Ingrow (on South Street, opposite the entrance to KWVR Ingrow Station).
It will include a talk from committee member Steve Bown entitled “Buried at St. John’s”. Steve will be exploring the lives of some of the people buried in the churchyard, from Frederick Simpson (the first person to be buried at St. John’s, in 1843), through prominent members of the Haggas family, well-known Keighley figures like doctor and archaeologist Francis Villy and two-time Mayor of Keighley William Clough, to lesser known tragic figures like Fanny Smith and Tom Richardson Whiteway.
The meeting will take place inside the church. Doors open at 7.15pm and the meeting will start just before 7.30pm. Entry is free to everyone on this occasion, although we do ask that attendees consider making a donation to the church and there will be a collection on the evening. Members can also choose to join the meeting via Zoom if they wish.
After the talk, weather permitting, there will be a look around the churchyard at some of the gravestones. A lot of the churchyard has tarmacked pathways, but please consider wearing appropriate footwear. It will not be possible to ‘Zoom’ this part of the meeting.
You can take out membership of the History Society at any of our meetings in the Civic Centre. Membership for the rest of 2026 costs £15 (or £20 for two people at the same address). Please pay in cash on the night. As well as free entry to our monthly meetings, membership also gets you invited to members-only events and you will receive the quarterly newsletter via email.
