The “gh” in the name of the town itself has been claimed as the “gutteral” sound in Old English that is either Celtic, Danish, Gaelic or Saxon in it’s origins. Which ever you choose to believe, it all points to a very early settlement probably consisting of a number of farmsteads grouped together on the lower more level land that occurred where one river joined another.
