The protection from the weather that the canopy gave and the wide pavements gave the street an unintended use, that the strict Edwardians would not have approved of. It acquired a local nickname of “the Cakewalk” and was used, when the shops were closed, by the local “Young Things” to parade up and down, dressed in their best in the hope of meeting attracting a ,ember of the opposite sex!!!!
