Look & See – Q6

Cavendish Street, below Lawkholme Lane, was the middle section to be built and was originally matched the narrower width of the start of the street. Originally this section had short streets of middle class housing leading back to the first train station, built 1847. As the angle was also different this began to cause a bottle-neck starting at the Cavendish Hotel, which stands on the site previously occupied by the Oddfellows Hall. This began to cause problems for the Industrialists Rolls Royce’s so, as many were on the Council, it was decided too demolish the houses, widen the road and build a parade of upmarket shops and install tramlines.
