Somewhat ironically, these shops ended opposite the North Street Police Station, which Keighley Town Council bought to ensure the 2012 Heritage Lottery money that restored many of our old buildings. The resulting Civic Centre is next door to George Smith’s house, which during WW2 had been the local Food Office, the land it stood on was in the possession of the Borough Council. Due to the popularity of the Library it was decided to include the land, as had been originally planned, with the Library and build an extension. The foundation stone was laid in 1959 and it became The Children’s Library. This was later closed by Bradford council, who began to use it for other administrative purposes.
