Look & See – Q23

North Street, the street of Banks, Law and Commerce, the route to Skipton and the Dales. This wonderful late Victorian streetscape is very different to it’s previous incarnation of genteel houses behind gardens, yes even the old Police Station, on the west side with more work-a-day buildings on the east side. As the town expanded the buildings along North Street began to creep further north along the road into the countryside beyond the bounds of the 1st Temple St Chapel, In fact Temple St. suddenly found itself on a back street as buildings were built in front of it. By the early 1900s the countryside had been swallowed up as far as Utley whereas in the 1850s little was built beyond Highfield Lane, St. Anne’s and the old road to Skipton (Spring Gardens Lane) were in the countryside.
