Look & See – Q19

The top end of Low St, as we know it, was originally known as Changegate, while for the road to Skipton you would follow Cooke Lane, North Street didn’t exist before about 1800. The Ancient Highway to Colne would take along Church St. and up Damside where you would then continue via Becks Road and Oakworth. To get to Halifax you would have to go via Park Lane, where you could pick up roads to Haworth, Bingley and Riddlesden. To get to Bradford you would tu left at the bottom of Low St and get there via Morton. Such were the routes until the Turnpike, Canal and Railway Companies came into being from the 1750s onwards. When roads began to be cobbled they moved down into the Valleys.
