Originally built in 1968 this was the first Mall to be built outside London. Modern clean shops replaced a hodgepodge of small Mills, Foundries, Factories and Shops. We lost the smell of these but we also lost the enticing smells in the shops. Shoppers could now park near the shops but we lost the Queens Theatre. The main shopping area was bounded by Low St, North St, Cavendish St and Hanover St. The new Market was built with Morrisons on the other side of it. This changed the walking route through the Town and shops outside this area began to suffer and the area’s deteriorated.
